Inspired by the Karoo. Crafted for You.
Karoya is a luxury tallow-based skincare brand born from the heart of Somerset East. Rooted in heritage and refined for the modern ritual, we bring the healing spirit of the Karoo to your daily care.

The Karoo Tallow Tradition
Our Heritage

Rooted in the rugged beauty of the Eastern Cape, Karoya was born from something deeper than a business idea — it grew from a respect for the land, and for the quiet wisdom of those who worked it long before us.
In Somerset East, at the foot of the magnificent Boschberg Mountain, we do something most modern skincare brands have forgotten: we render our own tallow. By hand. From locally sourced, grass-fed cattle that graze the same sun-baked land our ancestors once farmed.
It is slow work, intentional work — and that is precisely the point.
Tallow was once a staple of everyday life here. Farmers and families relied on it to protect and heal skin weathered by wind, dust, and relentless sun. We didn't invent this. We remembered it.
Today, we carry that tradition forward — blending pure rendered tallow with carefully chosen modern ingredients to create skincare that works with your skin's own biology, not against it. The result is something as enduring as the Karoo itself: simple, honest, and quietly extraordinary.
Our Values
Quality
Rendered With Our Own Hands
Skin Health
We don't outsource the hard parts. We source our tallow locally and render it ourselves, with meticulous care and attention at every step. It's a labour-intensive process — and one we are deeply proud of. Every balm, every soap begins here, in our own hands.
Skin That Makes Sense
Care
Tallow is remarkably similar to the skin's own natural lipid profile, which is why it absorbs so effortlessly and nourishes so deeply. Our formulations don't fight your skin's biology — they support it, promoting lasting hydration, resilience, and that quiet glow that comes from skin that is simply well cared for.
Slow, Small, and Intentional
We make in small batches. Always. Not because we have to, but because we believe that care cannot be scaled without being lost. Every product leaves our hands having received our full attention — honouring a tradition that was never meant to be rushed.

From Somerset East, with Love
My name is Lelani Smit, and Karoya begins — as so many good things do — with a grandmother.
Her name was Iza. A farmlady of the Karoo, practical and unhurried, who made her own boerseep the way her mother had before her.
Back then, boerseep served many purposes around the farmhouse — from washing clothes to caring for hardworking hands and sun-worn skin. No fuss, no labels — just rendered tallow, wood ash lye, and an instinct for what was needed. Her recipe was passed down the way the best things always are — quietly, and without ceremony.
We still have a bar of her soap. It sits with us to this day — a small, unremarkable-looking thing that somehow carries an entire world in it. A woman, a farm, a tradition, a time when people simply knew how to care for themselves with what the land provided.
When I started rendering tallow in my own kitchen — curious, a little sceptical, honestly not expecting much — I kept thinking about that bar. About what it represented. It worked in a way that nothing from a shelf had quite managed to, and something in me recognised why.
Karoya grew from that. From Ouma Iza's boerseep, from the Karoo, from a deep belief that our grandmothers knew things the modern skincare industry is only beginning to rediscover. We render our own tallow by hand, make in small batches, and put care into every step — because that is exactly how she did it.
Today, we honour that legacy in two ways: through Karoya Skincare's range of tallow-based skincare, and through our own Boerseep — made specifically for domestic use, just as Ouma Iza intended it.
This is my small business, rooted in a place and a person I love deeply. I am glad you found your way here.
